Born in India and raised in Cincinnati, Kalpana loved eating her mother’s Indian food. But the lack of measurements and clear instructions intimidated her from cooking it. Years later, she taught herself, using techniques she remembered from childhood and relentless refinement, and started making spice kits for friends. As their popularity grew, she launched Inspired Indian Cooking, selling the kits online. Soon after, she opened her retail spice shop in Evanston, Illinois.
