vanilla flavored sea moss drink

Anyone paying attention to the health and wellness market, they’ve probably heard of this plant. It does everything from improving your skin and joints to aiding digestion and immunity I’ve been told.

What Exactly Is Sea Moss?

The red algae called sea moss can be found in various places in the Caribbean, Europe, and the Eastern Coast of the United States.

It is a marine alga that is known for its vibrant red color, as well as its nutritional value.

Humans have consumed sea moss for thousands of years and used it as a thickener for soups and stews, cosmetic products such as creams and tinctures, and many other applications. 

For centuries, the Irish and Jamaicans have used sea moss to cure them of all their ailments. It’s packed with minerals, vitamins, calcium, and iodine. 

Ingredients

3.5 oz Irish moss/sea moss 

6 cups warm water to soak the moss

1 tbsp flaxseed, optional

2 c Oat milk or your favorite plant milk

Coconut condensed milk, optional to taste

4-6 Dates or ¼ cup of sweetener (agave syrup, maple syrup, or coconut nectar)

⅛ tsp Nutmeg

1/4 tsp Cinnamon

2 tsp of Vanilla

1 dash sweet finish for garnish

Preparation

1. Place the sea moss in a colander.

2. Use your hands to thoroughly wash any debris and excess sea salt from your moss. Do this several times until the sea moss looks and feels less gritty.

3. Place the sea moss and flaxseed in a large size bowl with the 6 cups of warm water and leave to soak overnight. The moss will expand in size and the water should thicken slightly

4. Use a colander to pour and drain off the excess water that was used to soak the sea moss

5. Place the sea moss into a blender bowl and puree it into a gel. The sea moss should be gelatinous in texture (You may need to add some water to your blender to help break it down).

6. Scoop out the gel and transfer it into a jar and refrigerate.

7. Add 4 tbsp to ⅓ cup of the sea moss paste along with the oat milk, vanilla, spices, and dates into a high-speed blender.

8. Blend into a smooth consistency and serve with a few dashes of sweet finish

Side note: You can make this a cocktail or keep it as a mocktail.
