Crispy Buttermilk Fried Okra
I truly love okra, and I have my entire life. Frying it is super comforting to me, and I hope you try this traditional southern preparation that perfectly highlights one of my favorite veggies
Ingredients
1-2 lbs fresh okra
flour
buttermilk
salt
cajun seasoning
onion powder
paprika
hot sauce
grape seed oil for frying
Preparation
**Marinate cut okra in seasoned buttermilk up to 3 hours in advance, minimum 30 minutes *
Heat about 1.5 inches of oil in skillet to 350-375
Set up your dredging station, I like to use disposable foil pans for this. Put flour in one, and season it up with your seasonings. The other one is for the buttermilk soaked okra. I like to season the buttermilk with hot sauce and onion powder.
Cut okra into bite size wedges. Drop into buttermilk and make sure all the okra is covered.
In batches, drop wet okra into the flour and gently roll around in flour until completely covered.
Make sure you have a paper towel lined plate set aside and start gently dropping the okra into the oil, in small batches. Fry for about 2-3 minutes, remove with slotted spoon and drain onto paper towel.
Season with salt immediately and serve plain or with spicy ranch
